CSRD regulations and implications for media campaigns
The CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) regulations require large companies to report on their environmental and social impact. The regulations also affect the impact of media campaigns, both online and offline.
The Omnibus package
The original intention was that more and more companies would be covered by the CSRD from 2024 to 2028. But the European Commission recently announced the 'Omnibus Package', which relaxes the rules.
With the Omnibus package, the rules might be as follows:
- Only the largest companies will remain subject to reporting obligations (around 20%).
- The obligation has been postponed to 2028.
- EU Taxonomy and reporting templates will be greatly simplified.
- Requirements around chain responsibility (CSDDD) will also be relaxed.
These proposals are currently pending before the European Parliament and the Council. The exact effective date of the changes has not yet been determined, as approval by these institutions is required before they take effect.
What does this mean for media agencies and advertisers?
The CSRD regulations are relevant for agencies and advertisers working for larger clients that have reporting requirements. This is because larger clients need more insight into the impact of their campaigns, even if they are not legally required to report. As a media professional, you therefore need to be prepared for questions such as:
- How much energy does a digital campaign consume?
- What is the carbon footprint of video, TV or out-of-home advertising?
- How sustainable is the content production process?
- Which suppliers do we work with, and how sustainable are they?
For agencies, this can mean needing tools to map these kinds of issues. For advertisers, it means looking more critically at their media choices and partners.
How we support
As an OOH party, we are actively working on making our offer more sustainable. We also offer insight into relevant sustainability data and help think about how campaigns can be designed in a 'green' way. In doing so, we help advertisers prepare their reports and achieve their sustainability targets.
